Can dogs have mayonnaise? I love to share new foods with my dog, but there’s nothing scarier than finding out your dog has eaten something dangerous when your back was turned. If your dog has swiped some mayonnaise from your kitchen or plate, you don’t need to panic. Dogs may safely have Mayonnaise in moderation, but it’s not good for them in large amounts. Mayo typically contains no toxic components, but it’s high in fat and salt. So, it’s not something your dog needs as part of their daily diet. In this guide, I’ll take a closer look at the pros and cons of mayonnaise for dogs, including ingredients to watch out for.

What Is In Mayonnaise?
Mayonnaise, or mayo, is a creamy, thick sauce often used as a condiment. It contains egg yolks, oil, and either lemon juice or vinegar. Though most of us love the taste of mayonnaise, you might not realise quite how high its fat content is! This is the main concern when it comes to mayonnaise and dogs.
Can Dogs Have Mayonnaise?
A small amount of mayonnaise won’t cause any immediate harm to your dog, as long as no toxic ingredients have been added to the recipe, like garlic or onion. However, you should not start including mayo as a regular part of your dog’s diet. Though your dog might like the taste, this condiment is high in fat and oil, which are bad for your dog’s health in large amounts.
Though some of the nutrients in mayo are great for our dogs, they’ll get everything they need from their regular food. Mayonnaise can be an interesting, new treat for them, but the cons outweigh the pros in this instance. So, I would recommend sticking to healthier alternatives. I’ll discuss some specific alternatives to try later in this guide, but for now, let’s take a closer look at the benefits and disadvantages of mayo for dogs.
Is Mayonnaise Good for Dogs?
While there are concerns associated with giving Mayonnaise to dogs, there are also some possible health advantages (although not many). Here are three potential benefits:
- It includes vitamins E and K, which are necessary for a dog’s hair and skin health. Providing them with protein and healthy fats aids in keeping dogs at a healthy weight.
- It contains vinegar, which may help to prevent hot spots and other skin problems.
- Mayonnaise’s acid content contributes to your dog’s digestive system’s optimal wellness.
These advantages only apply if you give your dog all-natural mayonnaise free of artificial components. Giving Mayonnaise to your dog is often not worth the danger despite the few benefits.

Is Mayonnaise Harmful to Dogs?
Mayonnaise has no harmful chemicals for dogs. It is an emulsion of oil and egg yolks with some acidity added for taste, like vinegar or lemon juice. Regular Mayo is reasonably safe for your dog in small amounts. But, in large amounts, mayonnaise can have a negative impact.
It has a high-fat level that, if consumed excessively, may harm dogs just like humans. It’s made with emulsifying egg yolks, salt, and oil. All of these components might cause digestive problems on their own. Your pet is at risk of becoming obese, which may negatively influence the quality and quantity of its life.
The easiest method to give Mayo to your dog is to combine it with other nutritious meals like veggies or lean protein. Make sure that the Mayonnaise you serve your dog has no onions or garlic since these are poisonous to dogs. Dogs may eat Mayonnaise in moderation, but only once or twice a week at the very most.
Mayonnaise Associated Risks for Your Dog
If your dog consumes an excessive amount of Mayonnaise or if you give it Mayonnaise regularly, there are a few problems you’re likely to run into. I’ve explained these in a bit more detail below.
Obesity
Mayonnaise has a lot of fat. And since the high-fat level is due to the fundamental components of Mayonnaise, it cannot be eliminated or lowered. High fat foods like this can cause weight gain, contributing to additional problems in older dogs, like arthritis and atherosclerosis.
Allergic Reactions
Eggs and a trace of soy in certain mayonnaise brands might cause allergic responses in some dogs. The first time your dog eats mayonnaise, watch for symptoms of an allergic reaction. This includes:
- Scratching
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Rashes.
If you notice any signs of distress or anything abnormal after your dog has tried mayonnaise, call the veterinarian straight away.
Gastrointestinal Distress
Foods heavy in fat might trigger tummy distress in your dog. This is because the fatty content may slow down digestion, making your dog prone to constipation.
Salt Content
As well as being heavy in fat, Mayonnaise is also high in salt. Increased salt consumption may result in excessive urine and thirst, leading to dehydration. It may also trigger seizures in extreme circumstances.
Salmonella Poisoning
The egg yolk in many mayonnaise varieties can cause salmonella poisoning or other hazardous bacterial diseases in your dog. But, store-bought Mayonnaise is less likely to contain salmonella bacteria than homemade Mayonnaise.
Alternatives to Mayonnaise for Dogs
Mayonnaise should never be a regular, or large, part of your dog’s diet. It is safe in very small amounts, but can lead to health problems if eaten in large quantities. Dairy products like cottage cheese, yogurt, and peanut butter are safer and healthier for dogs than Mayonnaise. Though, most ‘human foods’ like this should always be fed in moderation. Here are four alternatives to mayo that you can offer your dog as an occasional treat:
1. Plain/Dog Gravy
Basic gravy is appropriate for dogs in moderation. But, be wary of salt levels in gravy. And, never feed your dog gravy that contains toxic ingredients, such as garlic and onion. You should always read the ingredients of store bought gravy before offering it to your dog.
2. Plain Yogurt
Dogs will usually enjoy small amounts of sugar-free yogurt – and this treat has a similar creamy consistency to mayonnaise. Yogurt can provide your dog with calcium, to help maintain healthy teeth and bones. But, make sure the one you offer contains no artificial sweeteners or harmful added ingredients.
3. Low Fat Cottage Cheese
Full fat cottage cheese can pose the same risks as mayonnaise when fed in large amounts. However, dogs with a dairy tolerance might enjoy the taste of low fat cottage cheese. Cottage cheese, like yogurt, includes probiotics and protein that may be helpful to dogs.
4. Peanut Butter
Most dogs will love having a spoonful or two of peanut butter as a treat or tasty snack. Peanut butter is rich in protein, healthy fats, and more. Plus, it is very sticky, so can keep your dog occupied and quiet for a long time if you stuff it in a Kong toy!
However, you must always check the ingredients list before giving your dog peanut butter. Never choose a recipe that contains xylitol. This is a common sweetener that is highly toxic to dogs. Since peanut butter can be high in salt, you should also only offer this as an occasional treat.
Can Dogs Have Mayonnaise?
Allowing your dog a brief taste of mayo will not do any immediate harm but allowing them to consume massive amounts, particularly over time, may be harmful. When determining if your dog may safely have mayonnaise, moderation is essential. And, make sure you check the ingredients before offering this occasional treat. Avoid any recipes that include toxic ingredients like onion or garlic.
Does your dog like the taste of mayonnaise? Or would they rather have one of the alternative treats listed above?
